Josiah J. Newman is the doctor in charge of Ward 7, the neuropsychiatric ward, at an Army Air Corps hospital in Arizona. The hospital is under-resourced and Newman scrounges what he needs with the help of his inventive staff, especially Cpl. Jake Leibowitz. The military in general is only just coming to accept psychiatric disorders as legitimate and Newman generally has 6 weeks to cure them or send them on to another facility. There are many patients in the ward and his latest include Colonel Norville Bliss who has dissociated from his past; Capt. Paul Winston who is nearly catatonic after spending 13 months hiding in a cellar behind enemy lines; and 20 year-old Cpl. Jim Tompkins who is severely traumatized after his aircraft was shot down. Others come and go, including Italian prisoners of war, but Newman and team all realize that their success means the men will return to their units and combat.

严肃而不沉闷的电影，而且阵容强大。Peck饰演一位很有责任心的军医，Curtis的角色非常讨喜，Albert也很出色，Duvall当年真年轻，看演员表才认出来，Bobby的角色让人心碎，他是这部电影里当年唯一获奥斯卡提名的演员，可惜最后并无获奖。

别扭的基调，不知道为什么标签里有喜剧。主题太过沉重，普通喜剧不成立；又不敢放开去荒诞，黑色喜剧也不成立。Curtis的人设跟Operation Petticoat一样，但在此片里不讨喜得多。

格利高里·派克主演的反映战争精神创伤的战地精神病院影片，如片中人物所说“我们给他们治病，帮他们恢复健康，然后再让他们上战场去送死”，有些反战情绪。

有一些荒诞，也有一些悲哀。正如纽曼医生纠结的悖论：他，治好他们，然后让他们重上战场送死。

宁愿装疯卖傻，也不想让你知道他是个coward....
